(AP) William Holden, the rugged-looking and intensely private actor who played the leading man in four decades of movies and the best man at Ronald and Nancy Reagan's wedding, is dead at age 63. His body was found in his high-rise apartment Monday, and "everything appears to be natural causes," Los Angeles coroner's investigator Scott Carrier said. Holden had been dead about a week, said another coroner's investigator, Philip Schwartzberg. Holden was earning $50 a week when he got the part of a violin-playing boxer in the 1939 movie, "Golden Boy," and in 1953 he won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a cynical prisoner of war in "Stalag 17." He starred in "Sunset Boulevard" in 1950, "Network" in 1976 and "S.O.B." this year. The cause of death wasn't known, and an autopsy was tentatively scheduled for today.

White House duty officer Kim Hogsaid early today "it doesn't look likely at this point" that Reagan will attend the funeral, but added that no decision had been made. Carrier said Holden had been under "some medical care of some sort," but did not elaborate. Holden had an alcohol problem in 1960s but had reportedly controlled the habit. Holden was also reported to have seen a cancer specialist in West Germany during the past year. Nieper said at the time he did not think Holden was seriously ill.

Blake Edwards, the director of "S.O.B." and a friend, described the actor as "a loner" and said it wasn't surprising that his disappearance right have gone unnoticed for a week. "He used to get in his car and just drive," Edwards said in a telephone interview from London, "so I'm not surprised that this could have happened." Reagan was reported by White House spokesman Larry Speakes to be "shocked" at the news of Holden's death. "What do you say about a longtime friend?" Speakes quoted Reagan as saying. "A great sense of personal loss, a fine man. Our friendship never waned." 1881 Morgan Dollar Find Available Only Until Midnight Tonight November 1981, Philadelphia.
