A new tropical restaurant has opened on Governors Island, promising to transport New Yorkers to Tulum,a town on thecoast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Grupo Gitano announced last weekthe opening of Gitano Island, a tranquil 27,000-square-foot sandy getaway with Mexican cuisine, live music, and lush plants and palm trees, all just a boat ride away from Manhattan.
After four seasons in Soho,the team behind Gitano Garden of Love decided to take a shot at establishing their iconic restaurant and beach club on Governors Island. Gitano Island will feature familiar attractions that can be found at Gitano’s other locations, including the iconic black Bedouin dining tent with a 360-degree marble bar and the twin dining pergolas and open-fired kitchen.
Gitano regulars will be able to take advantage of theexclusive member’s lounge, centered around a 40-foot water fixture and a giant disco ball that hangs directly above. For the first timein NYC, Gitano will be hosting a collection of local and international DJs andlive artists underneath a tented stage. The music program will feature classic and nu-disco, house music, afro beats, and Latin music.
The food menu includes a variety of Mexican cuisine, including classics like guacamole, chorizo con queso, and watermelon salad. Chef Jose Luis Hinostrozahas curated a taco menu exclusive to Gitano Island, featuring a variety of unique combinations.

Guests will be able to purchase Grupo Gitano’s new Club Gitano membership, which grants them preferred access and reservations at all Gitano locations, and exclusive access to the Gitano Island members beach lounge.
Gitano Island is openseven days a weekfor brunch and dinner from noon to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends. The ferry to Governors Island departs daily from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street and from Brooklyn on weekends.

Dragon Fest, New York City’s first-ever outdoor Chinese food and culture festival, is returning next month after a successful debut last year. Central Park’s iconic Loeb Boathouse set to reopen this summer

Afterclosing its doors last year, theiconic Loeb Boathouse in Central Park will reopen this summer with a new operator. Mayor Eric Adams and the city's Parks Department on Thursday announced Legends Hospitality, the group that operates at Yankee Stadium and One WorldObservatory, has been selected to manage the Boathouse as part of a 10-year lease. If the contract is approved by the city's Franchise and Concession Review Committee next month, the venue could be open to the public as early as June.

NYC unveils first restored national medallions along Manhattan’s Avenue of the Americas

The city's Department of Transportationthis weekunveiled the first restored medallions installed along the Avenue of the Americas on lampposts from 42nd Street to 59th Street. The medallions, which were firstdisplayedin 1959,depict the emblems of each nation and territory in the Western Hemisphere. After years of neglect,the medallions had fallen into disrepair, leaving just18 of the original 300 medallions remaining. Last fall, DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced plans tocreate new medallions. On Monday, thecity installed the first nine of 45 new medallions, representing the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, Argentina, St. Lucia, and Uruguay.

This map of Central Park tracks fall foliage in real time

The Central Park Conservancy has launched a new, interactive Peak Fall Foliage map to let parkgoers know the best times and locations to take in autumn's most vibrant colors.In the coming weeks, approximately 18,000 trees across Central Park's 843 acres will reach their peak color.The map's real-time information is providedby Central Park's arborists who take care of more than 170 species of trees on a daily basis.

Target opens new store in Soho

These giant sculptures in the Garment District ‘wave hello’ to New Yorkers

New Yorkers will be greeted with outstretched arms the next time they walk through Midtown. Located on Broadway between 38th and 41st Streets, Hereis a public art exhibition featuring 14 oversized sculptures with their hands raised high above their heads. Created by artist Santi Flores,Hereis meant to represent unity, diversity, and individuality, and is dedicated to all New Yorkers. The installation is the latest public art exhibition to be sponsored by the Garment District Alliance and is free andopen to the public until August 29.

Abandoned Art Deco gem Metro Theater to return to the UWS as multi-screen cinema

An 89-year-old Art-Deco movie theater that has sat vacant on the Upper West Side for years hasfinally been purchased and will be restored to its former glory. Thelandmarked Metro Theater, abandoned since 2005, was purchased by an unidentified buyer from Californiawho intends tochange it intoa restaurant theater in which patrons can purchase food and drinks while enjoying their movies, previous owner Albert Bialek told theWest Side Rag.
