Bluetooth technology

Phonak took many people by surprise in November 2018 when it launched Marvel, the first hearing aid capable of streaming audio—in stereo—directly to and from any Bluetooth-enabled audio device. Previously, no other hearing aid manufacturer had solved the technical challenges of universal Bluetooth connectivity. And in 2020, Phonak introduced Paradise, which added the ability to pair up to 8 Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Now, Phonak is on its 3rd generation of Bluetooth-compatible hearing aids with the new Lumity hearing aids, which deliver the same universal Bluetooth connectivity with improvements in speech clarity in background noise.

Before Phonak introduced Marvel, only iPhone users had exclusive access to hassle-free direct stereo streaming. Android users, on the other hand, had to purchase and tote around separate streaming accessories to access wireless audio, from their phones. While many hearing aid manufacturers offer direct audio streaming from Android in 2023, only a small number of handsets are compatible. And, hands-free calling with Android is only possible with Sonova-brand products like Phonak and Unitron.

To deliver binaural streaming of music and phone calls over Bluetooth, Phonak developed the third generation of its SWORD wireless chip. It integrated all the communication protocols on a single hearing aid chip, which lessened power consumption and overcame battery life limitations of earlier chipsets. Phonak’s new PRISM chip—available in Paradise and Lumity—goes even further by doubling the memory and enabling 8 paired devices and 2 active Bluetooth connections.

Phonak has also worked with Sonova brand Advanced Bionics (AB) to integrate universal Bluetooth connectivity technology into cochlear implants sold by AB, like the Naída CI Marvel and Naída Lumity.

Phonak hearing aids range in price from $1,995 to $3,916 per device, depending on the model. Popular models include Audéo Lumity, Naída Paradise, Virto Paradise, and Bolero M.

Rechargeable hearing aids

While rechargeable hearing aids have been available for many years, lithium-ion powered hearing aids have only been on the market since 2016, when Phonak introduced its Audéo B-R rechargeable hearing aids. Previous generations of rechargeable hearing aids simply weren’t ready for prime time. Consumers experienced problems with short battery life, leading to less than one full day of power. Inconsistent power output also caused hearing aids to malfunction on a regular basis.

Advances in rechargeable lithium-ion battery technology have overcome those issues. Phonak reports that its new generation of rechargeable hearing aids can easily last a full day (up to 24 hours). Thanks to the consistent power output of the lithium-ion battery technology, users won’t experience any of the malfunctions or intermittence that limited older models.

Lumity: Bluetooth audio + better speech clarity

Lumity is Phonak’s latest flagship hearing aid. It offers universal Bluetooth^® audio streaming and hands-free calling from iPhone, Android, and most other Bluetooth-capable devices. Lumity is very similar to Phonak’s last generation (Paradise), but adds StereoZoom 2.0 and SpeechSensor, which together deliver clearer speech in background noise, according to Phonak.

Audéo Lumity hearing aids

Audéo Lumity is currently available in four Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) form factors, all of which are rechargeable. Lumity R (pictured above) is a rechargeable receiver-in-canal model that comes in a variety of colors from velvet black to sand beige. Lumity RT is similar to R, but adds a telecoil. And Lumity Life is like the R model (no telecoil) but adds much better water resistance—great for those who live in a more humid environment or have a more active lifestyle.

Finally, Lumity Slim is designed to look more like a high-tech communication device than a hearing aid, with a distinct left and right design for a contoured fit behind the ear, even for those who wear glasses.

Naída Lumity hearing aids

Naída Lumity is the Behind-the-Ear (BTE) style of advanced hearing aids from Phonak designed for a wider variety of hearing needs. They come in two models: Naída Lumity L-PR is a versatile rechargeable BTE, and Naída L-UP is an ultra-power device with a disposable size 675 battery designed particularly for people with severe to profound hearing loss. Both contain the best advanced Lumity features, although there are some differences. The rechargeable Naída L-PR comes with a motion sensor and tap controls, while the battery-powered Naída L-UP model does not; however, the L-UP comes with a telecoil while the L-PR does not.

CROS Lumity and Sky Lumity hearing aids

CROS Lumity is for people with unaidable hearing loss in one ear, often called unilateral hearing loss or single-sided deafness. The hearing aids wirelessly transmit voices and sounds from the unaidable ear to a compatible hearing aid on the other side using the Contralateral Routing of Signals (CROS/BiCROS system). CROS Lumity is compatible with Audéo L-R, Audéo L-RT, Naida L-PR, and Sky L-PR hearing aids.

Phonak also offers Sky Lumity for pediatric hearing loss. These hearing aids feature enhanced connectivity, enabling children to connect with and explore the digital world. Sky L hearing aids are designed to work seamlessly with myPhonak Junior—the only dedicated pediatric app—giving kids control over their hearing aids and lending a sense of ownership and personal connection to their devices. Parents can also utilize the app to monitor wearing time, schedule remote consultations with hearing providers, and set parental controls.

Phonak Lumity delivers the following key features:

• Stereo Bluetooth streaming - Streaming from iPhone, iPad, MacOS, Android, Windows, and any other Bluetooth-enabled audio device. Can pair with up to 8 Bluetooth devices and have 2 active Bluetooth connections.
• Tap controls- You can double-tap the Lumity hearing aids to accept/end phone calls, pause/result streaming, and access voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
• Motion sensing- A new ultra-low power accelerometer detects when you move and adjusts the hearing aid microphones and noise cancellation settings.
• Clearer speech in quiet settings -StereoZoom 2.0 and SpeechSensor, new features launched with the Lumity platform, deliver clearer speech in background noise, according to Phonak.
• Health tracking - If using the myPhonak app, you’ll be able to track steps, distances walked or run, heart rate, activity levels, and hearing aid wear times.
• Improved noise cancellation- Phonak introduced “Dynamic Noise Cancellation” in Paradise, which is an automated spatial noise cancellation system that works in combination with a directional beamformer microphone system.

Paradise: Lumity's predecessor

Paradise is Lumity’s predecessor family of hearing aids. Phonak launched its Audéo Paradise hearing aids in August 2020, offering most of what you’ll find in Lumity, minus the improvements in speech clarity in noise. In 2021 and 2022 Phonak introduced new Paradise models featuring form factors and functions not yet available on the newer Lumity platform. The new Paradise models include Virto P custom hearing aids, the Audéo Fit hearing aid with health monitoring features, and the Naída P high-power hearing aid for people with severe-to-profound hearing loss.

Audéo Paradise hearing aids

The Audéo Paradise range of devices includes the "waterproof" Audéo Life RIC model, a CROS Paradise, and ActiveVent, an intelligent automatic occlusion-control system. They feature universal Bluetooth connectivity, hands-free calling, lithitum-ion rechargeability, and access to Phonak’s full suite of wireless accessories.

Virto Paradise custom hearing aids

In 2022, Phonak introduced the Virto Paradise (or Virto P) custom hearing aid models. They are available in four different product styles, which vary by size and wireless capabilities including a near-invisible completely-in-canal titanium hearing aid. Four power levels are available, accommodating a wide range of hearing losses from mild to profound. All of the Virto P products are powered by standard hearing aid batteries, as Phonak does not currently offer a rechargeable custom product.

Virto P Titanium: Paradise in a custom IIC

Phonak Virto Titanium is the world’s only mainstream custom hearing aid made of premium medical-grade titanium. It is the smallest and most discreet custom hearing aid the company has ever produced. Manufactured with the latest 3D printing technology, Virto P-Titanium combines the superior strength and light weight of titanium with a comfortable fit in the ear canal.

The Virto P-312 offers flexible Bluetooth connectivity, all-day battery life, and a multifunction smartphone app that facilitates on-the-go sound adjustments. It’s a winning combination that should make them well worth the added cost for those who need serious help with their hearing.

Virto P-312 vs P Titanium

Virto P-312 and Titanium are both based on the Paradise technology platform. Virto P-312 offers more battery life, wireless technology, and the option of an onboard volume control wheel, but doesn’t offer the IP68 rating offered by the Virto P-Titanium.

Compared to traditional acrylic, titanium shells are 15 times stronger and 50% thinner. A thinner shell allows for deeper placement in the ear canal, resulting in a more discreet fit. Virto P-Titanium is an ideal solution for first-time hearing aid wearers, 62% of whom prefer an invisible hearing aid.

While Virto P-Titanium delivers on discretion, there are a couple drawbacks. With a smaller size 10 battery, the hearing aids only last a few days of sound before dying. They also don’t include the popular wireless streaming and hands-free calling capabilities that you’ll find in other Paradise products. Lastly, you’ll be limited to just the MiniControl and the push button for adjusting the hearing aids. We would recommend the Virto P-Titanium for those who are looking for more a set-it-and-forget-it solution.

Virto P-312 Black: The modern wearable

For those looking for a more full-featured custom-in-ear wireless solution, look no further than the Virto P in black coloring. While Virto P Black looks a lot like a Bluetooth earbud you might pick up at Best Buy for a few hundred dollars, it’s actually a high-end programmable medical device.

Audéo Fit: Paradise health tracking and more

In 2022, Phonak also introduced theAudéo Fit, a receiver-in-the-canal (RIC) hearing aid for fitness and health tracking. At a media event in Amsterdam titled “From Technology to Well Being,” Phonak said it was the first to provide users with data about their heart ratefor health insights. The Audéo Fit also records steps, activity levels, and distances walked or run. And it even tracks listening situations encountered over time.

Naída P: Tech for profound loss

Phonak introduced its first power hearing aid for people with severe-to-profound deafness in 1978. In 2021, Phonak introduced its 7th-generation hearing solution, the Phonak Naída P delivering all the benefits of Paradise generation technology.

In general, you can think of Naída P as a more powerful version of the Audéo P. Naída P comes in two different models (PR and UP), which are intended for people with more severe forms of hearing loss. The PR model delivers 130 dB SPL and the UP model delivers up to141 dB SPL (peak output).

Key features

• Powerful, rich sound - Runs on Phonak’s latest trademark sound processing technology: AutoSense OS™ 4.0. Also includes the new Speech Enhancer and Dynamic Noise Cancellation features introduced in Audéo Paradise.
• Paradise connectivity - Connects to up to 8 Bluetooth devices, including Android and iOS smartphones, TVs (via the TV Connector accessory), and the whole suite of Roger wireless devices for improving speech understanding in noise. Phonak’s new PartnerMic is also an option.
• eSolutions - With myPhonak app, you can now connect remotely with your hearing care provider. The new app also allows you to control your hearing aids, switch programs, and interact with the hearing diary.

Key differences between PR and UP models

• The PR model is rechargeable, while UP uses size 675 batteries.
• UP does not offer motion sensing or tap controls, but is unique in providing a telecoil
• PR may be used with a slim or standard tube, while UP uses a standard tube only.

Bimodal hearing with Naída Link

For those who use a cochlear implant in one ear, and a hearing aid in the other, you’ll want to look instead at the Phonak Naída Link M, which works seamlessly with the new Naída CI Marvel sound processor.

CROS P: Paradise for single-sided deafness

The Paradise CROS P solutions for people who are deaf in one ear feature a rechargeable CROS P-R option or a CROS P-13 that uses disposable size 13 batteries. CROS stands for Contralateral Routing of Signals and consists of two hearing aids—one to pick up sound from the deaf ear and send it to the better ear and one to play back the sound received from the deaf ear. The CROS P devices can be paired with Audéo P hearing aids used in the hearing ear and the system now works with the myPhonak app.

Bolero M: Marvel tech in a standard BTE

With the introduction of Marvel 2.0 technology, Phonak delivered a hearing aid for people with moderate to severe hearing losses who are better suited to a traditional behind-the-ear (BTE) solution. The new Bolero M aids offer the same universal Bluetooth streaming capabilities of other Marvel family hearing aids, but in a traditional BTE form factor.

Phonak Bolero M PR is a behind the ear hearing aid that has a telecoil, a dedicated volume control, a push button, water resistant coating, an ingress protection rating of IP68, and rechargeable batteries. Phonak says the batteries are engineered to last at least six years. The Bolero M M offers the same features in a smaller form factor, but lacks rechargeability. The M M runs on a size 312 battery.

Lyric invisible hearing aids

Placed completely out of sight in your ear canal near the eardrum by a trained professional, the Phonak Lyric 4 is an invisible hearing aid. It's worn round the clock for several months at a time through daily activities including exercise and showering. While traditional hearing aids capture and process sound outside of the ear, Lyric uses the natural anatomy of the ear to amplify and provide a full, natural listening experience.

Phonak Sky M: Marvel tech for kids

The Phonak Sky Marvel product family is designed for the special requirements of children with hearing loss. The Roger remote microphones with Marvel are a big help to children, who benefit from access to remote microphones both in the home and in classroom settings.

Phonak says it offers "the first and only operating system designed for children," with the Sky M products. And the Sky M lineup is available in a wide range of colors and sizes, so kids can mix and match colors to fit their preferences. Its rechargeable battery lasts all day, even while streaming.

For kids who use a cochlear implant in one ear, and a hearing aid in the other, the new Phonak Sky Link M works seamlessly with the new Sky CI Marvel sound processor.

CROS B for one-sided loss

In 2011, Phonak introduced the industry‘s first wireless CROS solution for single-sided deafness. Today's CROS B hearing aid, powered by Phonak Belong technology, detects your listening situation and switches to the best setting for it. It picks up sound reaching your deaf ear and transmits them wirelessly to the hearing aid in the ear with better hearing.

Phonak tinnitus solutions

The Phonak Tinnitus Balance Portfolio helps you manage the ringing, humming and buzzing sounds from tinnitus. Elements of the portfolio include a noise generator option for your hearing aids that distracts you from your tinnitus, a smartphone app that allows you to customize a library of in-ear sounds and music, and a separate accessory that streams sounds directly to your hearing aids.

Lumity family accessories: myPhonak app, PartnerMic™ and RemoteControl

Unless otherwise noted, all Lumity (L) and Paradise (P) family hearing aids are compatible with the myPhonak app, PartnerMic™ and RemoteControl. In the Costco world, the PartnerMic™ is referred to as PartnerMic Easy Line, and RemoteControl is referred to as Remote Control Easy Line.

Phonak ComPilot II and ComPilot

Phonak ComPilot II and ComPilot are multi-purpose neck-looped accessories. They transmit audio to your hearing aids directly from your Bluetooth phone, or from your TV via Phonak TVLink. They pair with other Bluetooth-enabled devices in addition to working with Phonak’s 2.4 GHz Roger family of remote wireless microphones. And they provide up to 24 hours of streaming time.

Phonak ComPilot Air II and ComPilot Air

The wireless Phonak ComPilot Air streams audio in stereo while connecting Phonak hearing aids via Bluetooth to a variety of sources, including cell phones, MP3 players, tablets, laptops and computers. Unlike the ComPilot and ComPilot II, which hang from your neck, it is completely wireless and doesn’t require a neck-loop. So it can be clipped to your collar or lodged in your shirt pocket.

Phonak TVLink

Used in combination with ComPilot or ComPilot Air, Phonak TVLink connects to your TV and transmits audio to your Phonak hearing aids—turning them into wireless stereo headphones. Streaming starts as soon as TVLink and the connected audio source are switched on, and it transmits at distances of up to 100 feet (30 meters).

Roger On: The Multipurpose Remote Mic

Struggling to hear in background noise? Hearing aids not helping? Roger On V2 may be the answer. With Phonak's MultiBeam 2.0 technology, Roger On V2 can analyze your environment and deliver clean speech directly to your hearing aids.
