What do you do with a kayak cart while kayaking? ›

Many paddlers, but not all, use their cart to roll the kayak and its contents directly into the water. For example, it can be difficult to move a kayak or canoe that's filled with a week's worth of food and camping gear. Rolling it into the water and then removing the cart eliminates the need to lift a heavy kayak.

Are kayak trolleys necessary? In most situations, a kayak trolley is an absolute necessity. They'll help you transport your kayak safely to the water, and they'll offer you a way to transport your kayak to more secluded launching locations.

To load a kayak onto a scupper cart the traditional method is to roll the kayak on its side and insert the posts of the cart into and through the kayak's scupper holes. A cradle or bunk-style cart will work for a more significant percentage of kayaks, than the scupper cart.

Using a Trailer

This is the easiest way to get your kayak around. Kayak trailers are light, easy to handle and can be towed by just about any vehicle. Best of all, you don't have to lift your boat high to get it on the rack.

The Basics

Obviously, you will need a kayak (or canoe), a paddle, and a life-vest or other personal flotation device (PFD). You will need one PFD for each person on the boat. The best type of kayak depends on the location of your trip. Lakes and calm rivers use a different kayak than white water or even ocean kayaks.

Rotomolded kayaks can be transported on their edge or upside down (hull up) safely using kayak stackers. However, composite kayaks should always be transported on their bottom using cradles to prevent deformation.

It is possible to set an anchor in a kayak without a trolley, but you'll need to install additional cleats to make sure you can easily set and retrieve your anchor. If you kayak in relatively still water, you can attach your anchor midship, but better practices are to attach it to either your bow or stern.

Scupper holes are pre-molded holes in the bottom of sit-on-top kayaks. They allow for drainage of that water, but they also allow water, creatures and debris to get into the kayak. If you paddle, pedal or motor through chop, the splash under the hull will allow water in, and everything that's in that water.
