BBC starCharlie Dimmock, the nation's beloved gardening guru, has seen her fair share of tumultuous twists and turns in her love life, including a controversial affair with a co-star that sent shockwaves through her fan base.

The green-fingered icon, who shot to fame on the hit show Ground Force alongside TV legends Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh, captivated more than 12 million viewers at the height of the programme's success before its conclusion in 2005.

However, Charlie's tenure on Ground Force wasn't without its drama; her personal life became tabloid fodder when her affair with microphone operator Andy Simmons was exposed. Despite the turmoil, now 57 year old Charlie, who had been in a long-standing relationship with viticulturist John Mushet, expressed "no regrets" about her actions.

Charlie met John during a sojourn in New Zealand in the early nineties, and the couple spent 13 years together, although they never walked down the aisle, with John affectionately referring to her as his 'misses'.

The scandal of Charlie's affair in 2001 marked the end of their partnership. Reflecting on those events, the Garden Rescue star revealed she no longer sees Andy but maintains a stance of no regret: "But I don't regret what happened. You wouldn't do anything if you kept worrying about what might go wrong," she declared, reports the Mirror.

Charlie Dimmock shared, "John and I had been together for a long time so when we split up, I relied heavily on family and close friends. I've discovered that the most difficult after-effect of the break-up is getting into another relationship."

Despite dating another crew member, sound technician Barry Smith, she has remained single the past few years.

In a 2016 interview with the Independent, Charlie asserted her stance on marriage: "I'm way past marriage at this point. I'm going to be 50 this year. Even sharing a house with someone would be a no for me."

She further shared about her preference for solitude, saying: "I like my own company. I like to do what I want to do, I'm very selfish like that. I don't mind fitting in a bit, but I like to be able to get away and have the house to myself."

Separate from her love life, viewers were also intrigued by Charlie's laid-back appearance on Ground Force, accentuated by her wild red curls and choice to go without a bra under t-shirts. This choice even received criticism from Dame Esther Rantzen.

Recalling a conversation in a 2021 interview with The Independent, Charlie said: "The TV presenter Esther Rantzen said to me, 'You'll be labelled the braless one for the rest of your life'. Ground Force was a long time ago, and I have to say, even now, people will bring it up. It is very silly."

Charlie disclosed her reasons for often opting to go commando in her younger days, citing comfort as the key factor. "It was always just for comfort," she remarked.

"If you're swinging a sledgehammer, you want to be comfortable! People say, 'Why don't you wear a sports bra? ' But those are not the comfiest things in the world."

In a candid 1996 interview with the Mirror, the television personality also shared her aversion to underwear, suggesting she felt more at ease without them. She divulged: "I only wear underwear if I have to get undressed in front of someone. So no bra. And no knickers either."

She further elaborated on her lingerie preferences, or lack thereof: "But if I do wear knickers, they're sort of Marks and Sparks 12-14s, because I cannot abide tight knickers. I find thongs quite uncomfortable as well. So I'm better without knickers altogether."
