At I 1 i 1 1 Evening' Mail Wednesday October 1 1969 BIRTHS MARRIAGES DEATHS Ex-drug addict gaoled for ten years An 18-year-old former drug addict who had been charged with murdering a 17-year-old girl by injecting heroin Into her was sentenced to ten Imprisonment at the Old Bailey yesterday Dennis Gaines appeared at the Old Bailey in March in the name of Zachery charged with murdering the girl He was acquitted or causing her death but convicted of unlawfully endangering her life by administering heroin' and placed on probation for three years Det Con Clive Rodley said yesterday that in June Gaines appeared at Cierkenwell Court and pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods which were prescription forms He was sent to the Old Bailey for breach of sentence passed In March He had been staying at a special horpe for drug-takers in Worcestershire and before escaping from there on June 23 had tried to persuade ethers to escape with him Poor conditions Mr Justice Thesiger passing sentence said: March fl decided to let him go to ah institution and not to prison The evidence in the case had been that the girl of 17 died in rather horrible conditions and died as a consequence of having heroin administered Gaines was acquitted of causing her death but convicted or unlawfully endangering her life by-administering heroin period spent in prison awaiting that trial turned him from a miserable wreck of a human being Into something which was quite tolerable and smart and indicated he had been weaned off the drugs and would not take part In assisting other people to get hold of those deadly drugs and destroying themselves as he practically destroyed DEATHS WIDMAN On September 29 Theodore Arthur (Ted) aged 68 years at his home 12 Coppice Close Dove-house Lane Solihull beloved
